Individual Therapy for Adults
I provide individual counseling for adults facing a wide range of life challenges. You don't need to know exactly what is wrong or what you want to change before coming to therapy. We can begin by figuring that out together.
Areas of Focus
Anxiety, worry, stress, and overwhelming emotions
Depression
Trauma and the effects of difficult experiences
Grief and loss
Life transitions and major changes
Relationship difficulties
Self-esteem and confidence
Alcohol and drug concerns
Gambling and gaming
Other behaviors that feel difficult to control
What You Can Expect in Therapy With Me
Therapy is more than having someone listen. I take an active role in therapy, offering questions, observations, information, and practical tools that can help you better understand yourself and make changes in your life. I see my role as a teacher and guide while respecting that the choices about your life are yours to make.
You don't have to know what to talk about. Some people worry that they'll come to therapy and won't know what to say. You don't have to arrive with an agenda for every session. If something comes up naturally, we'll start there. If it doesn't, I won't simply sit in silence and wait for you to figure out what to talk about. I'll ask questions and help guide the conversation toward areas that may need attention.
Between-session work is always an option, never a requirement. When it would be helpful, I may recommend books, workbooks, self-help or mutual-support groups, and other resources that fit what you're working on. I have experience with a variety of these resources and can help you consider which ones may—or may not—be a good fit for you. If you don't want to work on anything between sessions, that's perfectly okay.
You don't have to decide on abstinence before coming to therapy. If alcohol, drugs, gambling, gaming, or another behavior is causing problems in your life, we'll start with where you are. I can help you explore different approaches, including harm reduction, moderation, and abstinence. Together, we'll look at the role the behavior plays in your life, what you would like to change, and what approach makes sense for you.
